Proven Reserves Are Not Daily Production

The fundamental flaw in this "62 percent control" calculus is confusing oil in the ground with oil in the market.

Venezuela holds the largest proven crude reserves on the planet. That is a geographical fact. What conventional analysts forget to mention is that proven reserves do not refine themselves.

The Crude Quality Trap

Even if you could instantly double Venezuelan output, the global refining ecosystem does not operate on a single uniform product. Oil is not a fungible commodity at the burner tip; it is a chemical feedstock.

If heavy crude flows from the Gulf region stop or slow down, shipping light crude from Texas to complex refiners elsewhere does not solve the immediate product shortage. The supply chain fractures at the processing layer, not the extraction layer.

The Global Price Floor Myth

The most dangerous assumption in current market commentary is that domestic or regional production insulates a nation from global price shocks.

Oil is priced on a global market. If 20% of global transit is bottlenecked in the Middle East, global supply contracts instantly. When global supply contracts, global spot prices skyrocket.

It does not matter if a country exports more than it imports. Unless a government institutes complete export bans and price controls—disrupting free-market trade and triggering massive international retaliation—domestic producers will sell to the highest bidder on the international market. If Brent crude surges due to a transit crisis in Asia or the Middle East, domestic prices at the pump in North America or Europe will follow, regardless of how much oil is sitting in South American fields.

Physical isolation does not yield economic isolation.

The Logistics Paradox

Let us run a thought experiment. Imagine a scenario where the Western Hemisphere completely decouples its oil trades from Eastern Hemisphere logistics.

To replace the daily maritime throughput of key maritime choke points, you would need to reroute thousands of Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) across vastly longer trade routes. Transit times from South America to major Asian demand hubs are nearly double the route length from the Persian Gulf.

Longer routes mean:

The Real Cost of Hegemony

There is an undeniable appeal to the contrarian claim that strategic trade routes no longer matter. It promises a low-cost, low-risk foreign policy where a nation can project leverage without maintaining global maritime security.

But this approach carries its own distinct downsides. Believing you can ignore key global sea lanes breeds strategic complacency. It invites regional adversaries to test maritime boundaries, raises maritime insurance premiums across every trade corridor, and leaves global supply lines vulnerable to non-state disruptions.

Securing sea lanes is expensive, complex, and politically taxing. But declaring them irrelevant while counting unrefined barrels in the ground is far costlier.

Market mechanics do not yield to political declarations. The math of global energy security requires real flow rates, refinery compatibility, and physical transit lanes. Ignore those mechanics, and the market will enforce them for you.
